Built from practice, not from theory.

Uru Design Beyond was founded in Kozhikode, India in 2015 with a clear premise: that architecture and interior design should be practised as one discipline, not two departments that meet at handover.

The name URU comes from Kozhikode's maritime history. An URU is the wooden ocean-going vessel — the dhow — built by Kerala craftsmen and traded across the Arabian Gulf for centuries. The same hands that shaped the hull understood the sea, the wind, and the port at the other end. That integration of craft, climate intelligence, and cross-cultural exchange is what we bring to each project.

URU is also a palindrome. R at its centre. Seven spatial disciplines radiate from that centre — the 7R framework that defines our practice: Residential, Retail, Restaurant, Recreational, Regenerative Schools, Resorts, and Research.

The Gulf is where we are building our GCC practice. The ambition here is high, timelines are often compressed, and the climate demands a rigour about passive design that is too rarely applied. We think those constraints are generative, not limiting.
